Boosting Your Immune System with Chiropractic Care

Spinal adjustments in chiropractic care have been shown to boost immune function because they serve to correct the spinal misalignments that cause neural dysfunction. Neural dysfunction stresses a body out, which may lead to a weakened immune system and lowered response.

At Healing Hands Chiropractic Singapore, one of our chief aims is to help build a healthy and properly functioning nervous system with each of our patients by specifically locating and removing the body’s joint misalignments in the human spine, which will allow support to the patients immune system and keep them healthy.

With the current Covid-19 pandemic situation, taking extra precautions at this time is advised by  WHO and also getting your body checked and getting consistent and specific Chiropractic adjustments from our Healing Hands Chiropractic practitioners can help with your overall well-being and thus help to boost your immune system.

“Remember, Prevention Is Better Than Cure.”

How Does Chiropractic Help Boost Our Immune System?

In order to better understand how Healing Hands Chiropractic can help to boost our immune system, we first need to understand how our body’s nervous system works and how our overall health protects us from infections to common neuromusculoskeletal pain.

As shown in the image above, there are two types of nerves in our body,
1) The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) controls homeostasis and is responsible for the body’s “rest and digest” functions. E.g after a meal we want to relax.
2) The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) however controls the body’s responses to a perceived threat and is responsible for the “fight or flight” response. E.g sweaty palms, increase blood flow to a region etc.

In order for your immune system to work at its best, the parasympathetic nerves has to be active and healthy so that it activates all the functions you need to help repair your body including immune responses. Additionally, your sympathetic nerves has to respond by slowing down so that they do not interfere with the parasympathetic nerves and cause unnecessary stress to the body.

These parasympathetic and sympathetic systems of nerves are innately autonomic hence they respond automatically to a stimulus like when a person strains or sprains his or her low back; the body will respond by stiffening the muscles and cause an inflammatory process to start around the area/joint to protect it from further injury.

However, this response can cause many other disturbances to the other parts of the patient body systems that will trigger the immune functions other than just inflammation around the joint. It can increase the temperature around the injured area, increase blood flow to the affected, create scar tissues etc to what the body perceives as protecting the body automatically.

Coincidentally, as our body undergoes various stresses in our life, our nervous system can be forced to activate sympathetic nerves more often to handle the situation while parasympathetic nerves are impaired (at least temporarily) to allow for sympathetic nerves to work uninterrupted. This would, in turn, interfere with our immune system as our body focuses on handling the immediate stress instead of potential damage that would result from diseases and infection.

The Spinal Cord

The spinal cord is made up of bundles of nerve fibres (I.e strands of hair). It runs down from the brain through a canal in the centre of the spine. It serves to connect the brain to the rest of the body in order to allow constant communication ( Our nervous systems from the brain, to the brain stem, to the spinal cord that goes down the spinal canal, to the strands of individual nerves that exits the spine to our whole systems so we can perceive the world we live in I.e we know what’s hot/cold, sharp or dull) so that the body can function almost automatically at all times.

When our spine, which protects our spinal cord/nervous systems experiences structural and/or functional damages due to excessive stress, and bad lifestyle habits, it can put a strain on the nearby nerves and spinal cord. This would interfere with the normal functions of the nervous system, which protects us from perceived danger, trauma, and/or disruptions from various functions of our body keeping us from being healthy.

How can Healing Hands Chiropractic Help?

While many who seek treatment from Healing Hands Chiropractic are those suffering from bodily pain like acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain, our chiropractic treatment has various other benefits.

For instance, Chiropractic care has been known to help in the overall health of our patients. At Healing Hands’ it’s our desire and wants to help our patients lead happier & healthier life by eliminating pain through effective & holistic treatment. Through this holistic approach that not only sets our patients back to the road to recovery by adjusting, balancing and improving the spines mobility, but it will also in-turn aid our patient’s immune functions.

As many of you already know, our immune system is directly connected to our spine as it serves as the protector of the nervous system. So consequently, when the spine is not aligned properly, it can contribute to the problem and it may upset your entire system, resulting in a non-responsive or weakened immune system.

One of common causes of immune system interruption is subluxations (compression of nerve pathways due to the misaligned bone(s) in the twenty four movable bones of the spine). Chiropractors use a variety of skills that include spinal manipulation specific to a bone/joint to restore the mobility of the bone/joint and help to relieve the compression caused by the misalignment. This which would otherwise potentially boost your immune system through the increase function of the nerve and mobility of the joint
